Employee Appreciation Program

Tips and Hints for setting up an
effective employee appreciation program

One of the easiest ways to increase productivity and loyalty from your employees is to let them know that they are appreciated.  Saying "thank you for the extra work or staying late or whatever" is a first step but not nearly enough.
A verbal thank you can be followed with a personal note.

A sincere desire to show your appreciation is easily recognized by employees.  Your employee appreciation program doesn't have to be complicated or even expensive.  But decisions do have to be made.  As the owner of your business, you can make them or you can involve your employees in the process.

First decide what will be rewarded, how it will be tracked, and then choose the reward. Determine what type of reward your employees will most appreciate. Your first thought may be cash or a bonus.  But most employees consider cash or a bonus as just extra pay rather than a reward.

One very nice reward is to let your employees choose their own gift from a preselected group in a particular price range.  We have a variety of gifts priced from $25 to $1000 through our Employee Appreciation Program. Gifts don't always have to be expensive and can be awarded for different levels of accomplishment.

Here are some ideas to get your thought processes started:

  • Cutesy gifts or hats, tee-shirts and the like make good "beginning stepping stone" gifts.
  • Hold staff meetings anywhere but the office, possibly a nice diner or cafe. How about a catered breakfast meeting?
  • Create a "Went beyond the expected"  box. Have employees put the name of a fellow employee who went beyond the call to help them. Draw a name monthly for a reward
  • Start a birthday program. Have a gift delivered to an employee the week of their birthday
  • Have employee 'field trips' at least once a year and rent a bowling alley, theatre, or get some tables at a great restaurant or tickets to a special sporting event.
  • Award perfect attendance with a "day off with pay."
  • Recognize Employee Anniversary Dates with something special.
